CLAS Vivarium Facilities
Large Animal Facilities
Indoor Housing (Barns) - Large animals (horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, etc.) can be economically maintained in several buildings containing large stalls or runs. These include buildings F (6,654 assignable square feet (ASF)) and G (6,803 ASF), N-3 (6,803 ASF), 16 T barns, each with two stalls and individual outdoor runs (603 ASF each), and two U barns (1,188 ASF each). Facilities can be adapted for birds and exotic animals.

Outdoor Housing - CLAS maintains almost 3,000,000 square feet of corrals and paddocks and 82 acres of permanent pastures. These enclosures are designed for low-cost outdoor housing of horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs.

Dairy Goat Research Facility - The V barn contains approximately 4,000 ASF and includes a model dairy goat milking parlor, artificial insemination and examination stanchions, indoor housing for kids and sick animals, and feed storage, office, and laboratory space. Adjacent pens provide sheltered outdoor housing for approximately 250 goats. The facility is managed cooperatively with the Department of Animal Science and the School of Veterinary Medicine.

California Center for Equine Health and Performance (CCEHP) - The CCEHP consists of a large building with a laboratory, an equine breeding room, two foaling stalls, an office, and night watchman's quarters. Three equine barns with a total of 51 box stalls with attached outdoor paddocks, and a stud barn containing four stalls with outdoor paddocks, are located on the premises. In addition, there are six large exercise corrals, 26 individual outdoor holding pens, and a hay storage barn. The use of the equine research herd is coordinated by Dr. David Wilson.

Small Animal Facilities
CLAS Headquarters - The small animal housing facilities located at CLAS Headquarters include three M buildings (M1, M2, and M3), the N-2 and Q-2 barns, and P building.

Each M building has 4,104 ASF. The 23 8'x10' animal rooms and adjacent anterooms are environmentally controlled. The M buildings can be used to house mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, other rodent species, rabbits, cats, dogs, small pigs, birds, an d other small animals.

The P building, with 3,934 ASF, is conceptually similar to the M buildings. It contains 43 animal rooms, each with an anteroom, and two research laboratories.

The N-2 building is currently being used for housing rabbits used in the polyclonal antibody production program. The building can house approximately 160 rabbits. A smaller building, Q-2, serves as a quarantine facility for newly arrived rabbits.

Medical Science I (MSI) - MSI is a 4-story building with 15,000 ASF of associated vivarium space. Small and medium-sized research and teaching animals are housed here. A Rodent Barrier Facility is located on the third floor of the vivarium. A state-of-the-art veterinary surgery suite, with associated support space and personnel, is located adjacent to the animal quarters. A separate cage washing and autoclave center services the MSI vivarium.

Haring Hall Quadrangle (The Quad) - Four buildings house research and teaching animals at this location. There are 28 animal rooms (with anterooms) for housing species such as mice, rats, rabbits, cats, dogs, and amphibians. Twenty-eight filtered air units are available for housing rodents at the Quad. A separate cage washing and autoclave center services this area.

UCD Medical Center (UCDMC) - There is one building for housing research and teaching animals at the UCDMC. It consists of six small animal rooms comprising 420 ASF and is ideal for housing laboratory rodents.

Genomics and Biomedical Sciences Facility Vivarium (GBSF)

Kennels
The five main dog kennels total 9,000 ASF. Each kennel consists of a separate roofed concrete pad with individual dog runs. Kennel side panels and heaters provide comfort in cooler weather. There is a total capacity for about 200 large dogs or 400 smaller dogs. The runs can be adapted to house other species including cats, swine, and birds. An additional kennel is available for housing up to 40 dogs.
Rodent Barrier Facility
A Rodent Barrier Facility is located on the third floor of MSI. The barrier is especially useful for housing immunodeficient rodents (e.g., scid, nude, beige mice), specific mutant strains, and transgenic and knockout mice. Restricted access, protective clothing, specified traffic flow patterns, filtered air housing units, and an active Rodent Health Surveillance Program have been implemented to maintain a disease free environment.
Isolation Facilities (Maximum Isolation)
The Maximum Isolation building can house a variety of laboratory animals including horses and livestock. It includes 10,000 ASF with 12 environmentally controlled animal rooms (positive-to-negative HEPA-filtered in and out air). Lavatory and locker rooms, multipurpose research laboratories, a feed room, large and small autoclaves, and a service area are conveniently located within the building. Two adjacent wings provide additional conventional animal housing and laboratory space. Two nearby buildings contain four multipurpose laboratories for short term assignment and a HEPA-filtered survival surgery suite.
Surgery Suites
Three state-of-the-art surgery suites are located at the Armstrong Tract. Areas for animal prep, surgeon prep, and laundry and pack prep are integral parts of these units. Recovery areas are located nearby. Two of the three suites are equipped with HEPA filters. An additional livestock surgery suite is also available.
Support Facilities

Cage Washers - Three cage washing facilities, each with a tunnel washer, rack washer, dump stations for soiled bedding, bottle refilling stations and large storage areas for sanitized equipment, are located near all the CLAS-managed vivaria.

Autoclaves - Autoclaves of various sizes are located throughout the CLAS facilities.

Feed and Bedding Storage - Feed and bedding storage areas for both small and large animals are conveniently located in several areas. There is ample space for storing feed under controlled environmental conditions in large walk-in coolers.
