This list of journals, magazines and newsletters reflects those which discuss the concept of alternatives to animals in science, education and testing, rather than those that publish results of research which constitute or discuss individual alternative techniques or methods. This list is arranged alphabetically, by title. The few laboratory animal and laboratory science titles included also report or describe activities in the scientific community as well as report related issues. In general, we recommend these journals for keeping up in the field.

Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science (JAAWS). Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 1998-
JAAWS publishes articles and reports discussing methods of experimentation, husbandry, and care that enhance the welfare of animals in laboratories, farms, homes, and the wild. JAAWS is a joint project of PSYETA and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Each issue of JAAWS includes several reports covering scientific experiments or demonstrations that present evidence relating to prime issues of applied welfare science.

Scandinavian Journal of Laboratory Animal Science. Official quarterly journal of the Scandinavian Society for Laboratory Animal Science.

SCAW newsletter. Scientists Center for Animal Welfare. Bethesda, MD, 1988-
The SCAW Newsletter is published quarterly, topics include: national policies and how to comply, industrial concerns, bio-medical research issues in all research animals. Book reviews and information on national association meetings.

The Shape of Enrichment. San Diego, CA, 1992-
The Shape of Enrichment is a quarterly publication focusing on environmental enrichment for animals. This international open forum includes feature articles, regular columns, short notes, conference announcements, letters, and other notices. The non-technical format offers an easy-to-read publication geared towards zoo keepers, animal care technicians, and others directly involved in animal care.

This newsletter is directed to several audiences who share interests and involvement in the use of animals in reseaerch, teaching, and testing. UC Alert reflects this broad readership and includes articles of general interes, as well as those directed to one specific audience.
