Association Francaise d'Information et de Recherche sur l'Animal de Compagnie (AFIRAC)
The AFIRAC documentation center is open to journalists, professionals, practitioners, researchers and students. It includes print, photographic and video documents on animals in the city, children and animals, animals and the law, service animals, and the human-animal-nature relationship. A local computerized database provides access. AFIRAC maintains an active publication program in support of its programs.

The Delta Society
The society's Resource Library, which is open to the public, includes books, audiovisuals, and an article reprint file, including newspaper and general interest clippings. Audiovisuals are available for rent and/or purchase. Resource packets in such areas as animals and the elderly, animals in housing, pets in hospitals, animals in correctional facilities, and pets and AIDS, are available. A customized packet by topic, author, title and geographic location can be produced. Prices vary; inquire.
Delta's publications program includes: Learning in dogs : the principles of canine behavior and learning : implications for training; Service dog directory : a listing of training centers; Directory of pet loss resources; Handbook for animal-assisted activities and animal-assisted therapy; Pet Partners volunteer training manual; a video Pet bereavement : a time for sorrow; and Guidelines : animals in nursing homes.

Society for Companion Animal Studies
SCAS is an information source and contact for people conducting research or developing human-animal programmes. To that end, it publishes a news journal, booklets (Death of an Animal Friend; Guidelines for Introduction of Pets in Nursing Homes), posters (Pet Loss), and videos (A Kind Goobye). Its resource library includes materials that may be borrowed for the cost of postage. Patrons may also request customized packets of information resources. SCAS also participates in a network of experts for referral, including guidance in research techniques and methods.

 

  • DATABASES FOR JOURNAL ARTICLES

AgeLine
This database on middle age and aging prepared by the American Association of Retired Persons, is largely based on the association's own extensive collection. Popular magazines, scholarly journals, books, government-funded project reports, and conference papers are all scanned for indexing. Although there have been relatively long time lags in indexing literature, AgeLine is recommended for retrieval of literature on pets and the aged. There is no print counterpart to this database. AgeLine is the recommended source for materials on pets and aging.  Recommended online search term(s):  Pets

AGRICOLA
National Agricultural Library's database of selected journal articles, book chapters, and short reports, as well as books, serials and audiovisuals held by NAL.  The database is free, and is searchable using keywords.

Wilson Art Index
Prepared by the H.W. Wilson Company, the Art Index indexes a selection of the world's archaeological, architectural, and art journals. Art Index is recommended for the archaeo-zoological literature pertinent to the history of the domestication of animals (cattle, equids, canids, felids, water buffalo, etc.). Significant literature on animals in contemporary arts and the historic fine arts (painting, sculpture, etc) can also be found in Art Index. Use these terms to initiate searches in Art Index:  Animal Remains (Archaeology), Animals.  Note additional headings given in individual issues, such as: Camels, Domestic animals, Equestrian statues, Felidae, Fish in art, Symbolism of Animals

MEDLINE (PubMed)
Produced by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE is one of the major sources of biomedical and life sciences literature. It corresponds to three printed indexes: Index Medicus, Index to Dental Literature, and International Nursing Index. MEDLINE covers virtually every subject in the broad field of biomedicine. MEDLINE indexes articles from over 3,000 international journals published in the United States and 70 other countries. MEDLINE is indexed using NLM's controlled vocabulary MeSH (Medical Subject Headings).  It is a highly recommended source for the pet loss literature.  Search under Bonding, Human-Pet. Consider also browsing the heading Animals, Domestic from the beginning, as it also stands for dogs and cats. 

Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL)
Designed to meet the specialized needs of nursing and allied health professionals, the Nursing & Allied Health database provides access to more than 300 English-language nursing journals, publications of the American Nurses' Association and the National League for Nursing, primary journals in more than a dozen allied health disciplines, and almost a dozen library science journals. It also includes pertinent citations from approximately 3,200 biomedical journals in Index Medicus, and from the psychological, management, and popular literature. It is recommended for retrieval of animal-assisted therapy literature.  Recommended online search terms: Human Pet Bonding, Animal-assisted Therapy, Pets

PAIS International in Print
Produced by Public Affairs Information Service, New York, PAIS International provides access to the public policy literature of business, economics, finance, government, and other social sciences. It provides comprehensive coverage of material published worldwide in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. It is recommended for issues involving public policy.

Search the printed subject indexes beginning at the words Animal, and Animals, and note related headings given below them such as Animal rights, Endangered species, Laboratory animals, Livestock, Pets, Wild animals

The Philosopher's Index
Prepared at the Philosophy Documentation Center, Bowling Green State University, the Philosopher's Index indexes and abstracts books and journals of philosophy and related interdisciplinary fields. It is recommended as a primary source for the philosophies of science and of mind, including animal and environmental ethics and related issues. Coverage: 1940 to the present  Recommended online search term: Animal

PsycINFO
Prepared by the American Psychological Association, PsycINFO covers the world literature on psychology and the related behavioral sciences. Over 1,300 journals, technical reports, monographic series, books, and dissertations are scanned per year to provide coverage of original research, reviews, discussion, theory, conference reports, panel discussions, case studies and description of apparatus. Recommended as first source for recent journal literature. Covers both animal-assisted therapy, animal behavior, including the behavioral aspects of applied ethology, and grief issues well.  Coverage: 1967 to the present.  Recommended online search terms:  For 1982 and later literature, only Pets;  For 1991 and later literature, Interspecies Interactions. You may wish to restrict your retrieval with the term Human, which will retrieve human and animal interactions. For the entire file, search text words pets or animal-assisted therapy or companion animal

Sociological Abstracts
Sociological Abstracts indexes the world's literature in the social & behavioral sciences. Over 1,600 journals and other serial publications are scanned, providing coverage of original research, reviews, discussions, books, panel discussions, case studies, conference papers, and dissertations.  It is recommended as a primary source for social aspects of animals and the animal rights movement.  The following subject term will be helpful: Animal human relations.
