  • Application process: Submit letter of intent, curriculum vitae, 2 references, and academic transcript to Dr. Helmick. Rolling admissions for non-funded externships. Two funded programs are available; applicants for the Spring program (Jan- June) must apply by Nov 1 st of the previous year. Applicants for the Fall program (July – Dec) must apply by May 1 st of the same year.
  • Perks : The Zoo offers funded externships during the school year, on a competitive basis. Compensation is $100/ wk, up to $800 maximum. Funds will be distributed upon completion of externship.
  • Duration : 4-16 wks. Externs completing a funded externship must commit to a minimum of 6 weeks. 40 hours/wk, although externs should be available nights and weekends, if needed.
  • Additional Info : If interested, externs may complete a research project during externship; some funding is available on a competitive basis. If desired, extern may also spend time working at a local emergency veterinary center.
