University of California Veterinary Medical Center - San Diego

Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Director, UCVMC - San Diego, a new joint venture of the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis and the University of California, San Diego. The Director will hold a joint administrative and professorial appointment in appropriate academic departments at both institutions. Salary and level commensurate with qualifications.

The Director will develop and coordinate the new UCVMC programs located at the University of California, San Diego and the surrounding institutions, including the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, Sea World, Hubbs Research Institute and Navy Marine Mammal program. The UCVMC-SD program will include academic laboratory animal medicine, animal model research, speciality veterinary practice, and zoological animal medicine. The Center participants advocate a multidisciplinary approach, which necessitates intercollege/school cooperation for assessing important questions about animal biology, pathogenic mechanisms of disease, potential animal models, health management of a variety of animal species and outreach of new specialties in the practice of veterinary medicine. Current strengths include an outstanding School of Veterinary Medicine with a strong Comparative Medicine program at UC Davis, outstanding biology and medical programs at UC San Diego, outstanding zoological medicine programs in San Diego, and new and developing speciality programs at UC Davis. Areas of faculty specialization in the Schools of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy and Pharmacological Sciences include microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, neuroscience, biology, marine biology, zoological animal medicine, laboratory animal medicine, comparative medicine, and all disciplines of veterinary medicine.

Responsibilities of the professorial appointment will include continuation of a successful research program, involvement in curricular development, and teaching of graduate academic and graduate clinical students or professional students as appropriate. The Director will be responsible for implementing the vision of this unique partnership between the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis and both the School of Medicine and the Laboratory Animal Medicine Program at the University of California, San Diego along with the zoological programs at the San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park and Sea World. Specific responsibilities include (1) administration of the overall program and facilities of the Center, (2) management of an individual research program in the area of the Director's expertise, (3) development of long-term plans integrating the academic veterinary medical programs in the San Diego area, (4) design and implementation of a program for development of the Center, (5) participation in instructional programs of the School of Veterinary Medicine and UC San Diego Campus, (6) recruitment of world class faculty and staff for the Center, (7) public outreach and development activities in the southern California area, and (8) other related activities.

The University of California is one of the largest and most renowned centers of higher education in the world. The faculty of the University are internationally known for their distinguished academic achievements. Both UC Davis and UC San Diego are among the nation's top 20 universities in research funding.

Qualifications for the position include: (1) DVM or equivalent veterinary degree required, Ph.D. and/or advanced training preferred; (2) demonstrated and distinguished research record in the area of veterinary or comparative medicine; (3) a nationally recognized reputation for career achievement and leadership; (4) a broad understanding of biomedical, biological and health sciences; (5) demonstrated administrative/leadership skills; (6) excellent communication skills, the willingness to work closely with faculty and other professionals and the ability to facilitate multidisciplinary research; (7) demonstrated excellence in teaching including DVM, graduate academic and graduate clinical student training; (8) ability to understand laboratory animal care issues and the specialty clinical practice component of the Center; (9) experience in the acquisition of extramural funding and a commitment to work in securing additional funding for the programs of the Center and (10) potential for integration of surrounding research and practice programs. The Director is expected to qualify for and be appointed to a senior professorial position in an appropriate academic department in the School of Veterinary Medicine UC Davis and School of Medicine UCSD.
