The School of Veterinary Medicine honors distinguished achievement and service with the following awards:

Alumni Achievement Award

One or more alumni are honored each year for outstanding personal and professional contributions to veterinary science or one of its branches, veterinary practice in any of its forms, or to mankind and the advancement of human welfare.

The Alumni Achievement Award is the highest honor bestowed by the school. Honorees may be graduates of school's DVM, MPVM, and graduate academic (MS, PhD) programs, or individuals who have completed internship or residency programs. The award is presented during the School of Veterinary Medicine commencement ceremony each June.

James Moore, distinguished research professor, University of Georgia Department of Large Animal Medicine (DVM, UC Davis, 1974) for his contribution to understanding the pathophysiology of equine colic, endotoxemia and laminitis;

Marguerite Pappaioanou, professor of infectious disease epidemiology, University of Minnesota School of Public Health and College of Veterinary Medicine (MPVM, UC Davis, 1976; PhD, comparative pathology, UC Davis, 1982) for her outstanding contributions to epidemiology and public health;

John Pascoe, executive associate dean, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (residency, equine surgery, UC Davis, 1979; PhD, comparative pathology, UC Davis, 1986) for his vision, energy and passion as architect of the future of the world's leading veterinary school and academic program.

El Blanco Award

The El Blanco Award recognizes individuals whose contributions have led directly to important advances in animal health and well-being. Recipients of the award receive a special plaque, and their name also is inscribed on a perpetual plaque on display at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

The award is named for the cat, El Blanco, whose owner contributed to the understanding that the amino acid taurine is a vital nutrient in the feline diet.

Distinguished Service Award

The school recognizes the dedication of those who further the school's threefold mission of teaching, research and public service through their personal efforts.
