The VORL provides a specialized facility equipped for both basic and applied musculoskeletal research.  Investigators form multidisciplinary research teams to solve difficult research problems, coordinate attempts to obtain extramural research grants, determine new research needs for the VORL, and sponsor orthopedic rounds and/or other educational activities related to orthopedic research in the School.

Research programs include, but are not limited to, investigations of biomechanics, pathology, biology and clinical management of the following:

  • Lameness
  • Fractures in horses and companion animals
  • Racehorse joint diseases
  • Canine elbow and hip dysplasia
  • Cartilage injury and developmental disorders
  • Total joint prosthesis in small animals
  • Tendon and muscle adaptations to exercise and alterations associated with disease
  • Bone disease in food and companion animals
Research programs are funded by a number of sources (see SUPPORT), including the Center for Equine Health, Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, Center for Companion Animal Health, Southern California Equine Foundation, and United States Department of Agriculture.
