Spring wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the California Raptor Center’s (CRC) Open House on Saturday, May 7th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Come visit our two resident golden eagles in their new enclosure and meet many more ambassadors of the raptor family who will be out on the glove for a closer look.

Special presentations at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. will demonstrate fascinating features of raptor biology and ecology. In addition, Hans and Pam Peeters will be on hand to sign their books—Raptors of California and Owls of California and the West. A professor emeritus of biology/zoology, Hans studied the Golden Eagles near his home in the inner coast range of California for decades, discovering that they constituted the densest breeding population of that species in the world.

In addition to his raptor books, Hans is also author of the field guide Mammals of California (University of California Press) and two books on falconry. He is an award-winning painter as well. Besides illustrating his own books, he has contributed illustrations to various bird field guides. Two of his depictions of golden eagles have appeared on Mexican postage stamps, to promote conservation. The CRC will have copies of books available for sale with all proceeds going to the birds, so to speak!

We also invite you to join our Hawk Walk which starts earlier at the CRC gate at 8:00 a.m. (bring binoculars). Cameras welcome, but no flash please. Visitors over the age of 21 will have the opportunity to sample selections from Mendocino Brewing Company and Whole Foods Market. (No alcohol sales are available.) Appetizers and beer will be available from 12-2 pm.

The CRC onsite museum will be open, and T-shirts, plush toys and other souvenirs will be available for purchase. While the Open House is free, we greatly appreciate tax-deductible donations that help provide care and feeding of resident raptors, underwrite education programs, provide medication and medical supplies for rehabilitation, and maintain our unique center.

Directions: From Interstate 80, take the UC Davis exit. Turn south on Old Davis Road, away from the main campus. Cross the railroad tracks and continue to the Putah Creek Bridge where there is a low-profile blue and gold California Raptor Center sign. Do not cross the bridge. Instead, turn left onto the paved levee road and follow it for one block until it dips down off the levee. Turn right into the CRC parking lot. Parking is free.
