Our School, one of the premier institutions of its kind in the world, provides outstanding education for society-ready veterinarians and produces innovative research to advance veterinary patient care, public health and environmental stewardship. Our primary mission is our educational programs for veterinary students, residents, graduate students and postdoctoral scientists. We provide high-quality veterinary, diagnostic and information services throughout the state and even nationally and internationally.
The William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital supports state-of-the-art animal patient care and provides the primary clinical teaching experience for veterinary students. The hospital is also a focal point for translational research that benefits our animal patients and their owners. With more than 30,000 animal patients each year, the teaching hospital provides a rich environment for learning and fostering innovative patient care to solve the most pressing animal health needs. Our DVM students and residents work with state-of-the-art equipment, highly trained technical and nursing staff, and internationally recognized faculty veterinarians. In this vibrant environment, our students work as part of a team to learn the critical skills necessary to practice veterinary medicine.
This School is also charged with generating new knowledge to improve animal, human, and environmental health. Our faculty lead the nation in the area of research through a broad range of exceptional programs. Since animals and people share the same environment and many of the same health issues, we have embraced a One Health approach to our teaching, research and service programs. By viewing all of our programs as components of One Health, we enhance our ability to addresses complex problems facing our society and bridge the biomedical sciences related to animals, people, and the environment. For example, our team is pioneering the use of stem cell therapy in horses and dogs and leading efforts to translate this knowledge to benefit people. When studying the impact of toxic chemical spills on our environment and waterways, we look at the impact on the animals and plants living there, and the potential impacts on people through drinking water, crop irrigation or consumption of animal based food products.
The integration of research and education is a unique and powerful advantage for our students and clients. Faculty members share their findings through classroom teaching, scientific publications and clinical practice; translating their knowledge to address animal and human health.
As you visit our web site I encourage you to explore the various department and center pages. Our academic departments host faculty in the core disciplines of veterinary medicine such as anatomy, physiology, medicine, pathology, surgery and many more. Through our centers you can access detailed information about a species or discipline and the kinds of research discoveries our faculty are pursuing. We have created a number of innovative centers of excellence focused on species interests and multidisciplinary themes in companion animal health, equine health, food animal medicine, food safety, wildlife health, comparative medicine, and many more. Although our main campus is in Davis we also have units throughout California and even in Washington.
I hope you will enjoy exploring the School's website, learning about the breadth and specialization of veterinary medicine, the integration of research and education, our multitude of services and diagnostic tools, and the unique and powerful potential of this School through its One Health approach.
