About Serology

Serological testing remains a very major component of a well-managed Rodent Health Surveillance program.  Many university-based rodent biology programs subscribe to our services throughout the year, in order to ensure confidence in their colony health.  Commercial biotech conducting research with mouse or rat models also routinely deliver samples for screening.  Serology services use advanced, state-of-the-art multiplexed fluorometric bead-based immunoassay technology, in conjunction with conventional ELISA and IFA methods, to provide comprehensive screening panels for rodent viral and bacterial pathogens.  The use of multiplexed serological testing systems are becoming the standard of the industry, and CPL is committed to those technology platforms.

In situations where facilities import new experimental or breeding animals into environmentally controlled areas, we provide capabilities to serologically test live sentinel subjects or blood samples for a wide variety of significant pathogens. The laboratory also uses special fluorescent microscopy to perform Immunofluorescent Assays (IFA).

We have many levels of serological panels tailored to meet the needs of Quarterly, Semi-Annual and Annual Sentinel Monitoring Programs.  We have surveyed many clients and have designed our panels to include the most routinely requested profiles.  Our staff is experienced, and can easily custom-fit individual etiologies into your testing regimen.  Please inquire or review our service listing to see the many etiologies we assay for.  For your convenience, the service listing also has a key that refers to the many commonly used abbreviations for rodent viral agents.

Serology specimens are most often serum or diluted serum (1 part serum mixed with 4 parts saline).  Whole blood may be submitted if samples are sent via overnight priority mail. Specimens are best preserved and transported refrigerated at 2-8°C.  Ship specimens via overnight priority mail, using insulated containers with well-frozen ice packs.
