Dairy Product Pathogen Testing
The San Bernardino laboratory is the designated laboratory in the system to provide this service surveillance and diagnostic testing on milk and dairy products submitted by the Milk and Dairy Foods Safety Branch (MDFSB) of CDFA. This includes testing for Listeria sp., Brucella sp., Salmonella sp, Campylobacter sp., E. coli O157:H7 and other pathogens, which may have zoonotic importance.
The Pathogen section provides diagnostic and regulatory testing on specimens submitted by the dairy inspectors and dairy investigative unit of the MDFSB of CDFA.
The mission and operating philosophy of the Milk Quality section is unique to all other sections within CAHFS in that it operates and provides services in accordance with the Food and Agricultural Code Sections 520 through 531 and the State/Federal Cooperative Interstate Milk Shippers (IMS) program. Under this agreement the section provides microbiological analytical services for Grade A and manufactured raw milk produced by dairies located throughout the state of California and Nevada (by request from the state of Nevada); provides microbiological analytical services for market milk products, manufactured milk products and products resembling milk products processed in the state of California; and serves as the State Central Milk Laboratory. In this capacity it provides all regulatory compliance testing, administers proficiency tests to commercial and Public Health Laboratories annually, participates in the U.S. FDA Drug Residue Surveillance program and laboratory evaluation program.
