Tender Loving Care for Pets (TLC)

Frequently Asked Questions about the TLC Program

I have already found a caretaker for my pets. May I still enroll in the TLC for Pets Program?
Yes. We will ask that your pre-identified caretaker complete a "Caretaker's Agreement" so that we can receive regular updates on the health and well-being of your pet.

I have two dogs and two cats. Will they all go to the same home?
We will do our very best to identify a caretaker home that can accommodate your pets' animal partners. We know that animals develop bonds with one another and stress is minimized when they are placed in a new environment together. Yet, in the end, finding a permanent loving home for each pet is the objective.

Does the enrollment fee change if I have more than one pet to enroll?
No. The enrollment fee is $1,500 for each animal. The fee covers the costs of the individualized health and behavior assessment and the preparation of the subsequent caretaker placement.

My pet has a history of aggression; he is territorial and protective of his food. Will you be able to find him a new home?
With input from our behavior specialists, we will evaluate the suitability of placing your pet in a new home. We anticipate that after working with our specialists we may be able to enroll the dog or cat in the TLC for Pets Program; however, aggressive animals may be denied enrollment depending upon the severity of their behavior.

My pet is a "special needs" pet with many health problems. Is she eligible to be enrolled in the TLC for Pets Program?
Yes. We will be able to manage your pet's health care situation with the attending veterinarian. The caretaker will be trained to provide any special attention your pet may need.

What if I outlive the pet I have enrolled? Can I substitute a pet I obtain later?
Yes. You may substitute another pet for the one that was initially enrolled. There will be another enrollment fee assessed to cover the costs of evaluating the pet and completing the animal's health history. However, no changes to your estate documents are required.

What if I have no pets at the time of my death?
If you do not have pets at the time of your death, then the arrangement is void and there is no expectation of a bequest. However, if you wish to help animals through an estate gift, there are charitable bequest options to benefit animals that can be substituted in the event you do not have pets at the time of your death. The Director of the TLC for Pets Program or a development officer at the School of Veterinary Medicine can review these options with you.
