Autism Research and Advocacy Organizations

http://www.cureautismnow.org/
Autism Speaks and the Cure Autism Now Foundation are dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society; and to bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder.

http://www.feat.org/
FEAT is a non-profit organization of parents, educators, and other professionals dedicated to providing world-class Education, Advocacy, and Support for the Northern California Autism Community.

http://www.ladders.org/
The Autism Research Foundation is a group of bright and curious researchers investigating the neurobiological underpinnings of autism and related disorders. Realizing that research cannot occur in a void, this site is dedicated to presenting all the information that comes in or out of this organization, hoping to reach out to those who would like to learn more, in many capacities, about these brain disorders.

http://www.autism.com/ari/
The Autism Research Institute is primarily devoted to conducting research, and to disseminating the results of research, on the causes of autism and on methods of preventing, diagnosing and treating autism and other severe behavioral disorders of childhood.

http://www.autism-society.org/
The Autism Society of America is dedicated to increasing public awareness about autism and the day-to-day issues faced by individuals with autism, their families and the professionals with whom they interact. There is an extensive list of links to other autism organizations at this site.

http://www.autism.org/
The Center for the Study of Autism provides information about autism to parents and professionals, and conducts research on the efficacy of various therapeutic interventions.

http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/
The mission of the National Autism Association is to educate and empower families affected by autism and other neurological disorders, while advocating on behalf of those who cannot fight for their own rights.

http://www.maapservices.org
Maap Services, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing information and advice to families of more advanced individuals with autism, Asperger's syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder. The organization provides the opportunity for parents and professionals to network with others in similar circumstances and to learn about more advanced individuals within the autism spectrum.

For many reasons, children are likely to be more vulnerable than adults to the effects of environmental contaminants. To better understand the effects of these exposures on children's health, the Centers for Children's Environmental Health and Disease Prevention Research ("Children's Centers") were established to explore ways to reduce children's health risks from environmental factors. These programs are jointly funded by the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

The NICHD was initially established to investigate the broad aspects of human development as a means of understanding developmental disabilities, including mental retardation, and the events that occur during pregnancy. Today, the Institute conducts and supports research on all stages of human development, from preconception to adulthood, to better understand the health of children, adults, families, and communities.

The University of California, Davis, Health System has established the M.I.N.D. Institute, an interdisciplinary institute to conduct research and provide clinical programs focused on neurodevelopmental disorders. Leading scientists, physicians and educators in fields as diverse as molecular genetics and clinical pediatrics are joining forces to better understand development and brain function.

Autism Genetics

http://www.agre.org/
AGRE is a DNA repository and family registry, housing a database of genotypes and phenotypic information available to the entire scientific community. The goal of AGRE is to facilitate more rapid progress in identification of the genetic causes of autism and autism spectrum disorders by promoting sharing and collaboration. This collection of a large set of multiplex families is a first step in that direction.

The International Molecular Genetic Study of Autism Consortium (IMGSAC) is a team of clinicians, laboratory researchers and statistical geneticists from several European countries and the U.S.A., established to investigate the genetic basis of autism and related disorders.

http://www.exploringautism.org/
Exploring Autism is dedicated to helping families who are living with the challenges of autism stay informed about the breakthroughs involving the genetics of autism.

http://www.gdb.org
The Genome Database (GDB) is the official central repository for genomic mapping data resulting from the Human Genome Initiative. The Human Genome Initiative is a worldwide research effort to analyze the structure of human DNA and determine the location and sequence of the estimated 100,000 human genes. In support of this project, GDB stores and curates data generated worldwide by those researchers engaged in the mapping effort of the Human Genome Project (HGP).

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/
The National Center for Biotechnology Information creates public databases, conducts research in computational biology, develops software tools for analyzing genome data, and disseminates biomedical information - all for the better understanding of molecular processes affecting human health and disease.
