An Industry Advisory Board was established in 1987 to advise the CEH on future directions and goals for equine research. The Board is currently comprised of 15 members representing broad segments of the equine industry. In addition, the CEH relies on a Scientific Advisory Committee comprised of faculty members from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, the California State University system, and the Industry Advisory Board.
Funds generated through grants, gifts, donations and the stallion breeding program are applied directly to research. Since 1984, the CEH has funded 400 research projects with total budgets exceeding $6.5 million. Other uses for these funds include:
- Training of equine specialists for board-certificationt Fellowships to support training of academic and research scientists
- Scholarships for equine-oriented veterinary students
- Classes in continuing education for practicing veterinarians and educational seminars for the general public
- Development of new technologies for the care and treatment of horsest Development in areas that apply directly to the care and treatment of patients at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital
- Publication of a broad array of educational materials for the general public and for veterinary professionals.
