Ambassador Ola Ullsten

Ambassador Ullsten will discuss "Forests In Crisis—A Threat to a Healthy Planet."


Ambassador Ola Ullsten was a member of the Swedish Parliament from 1964 to 1983. He served as leader of the Swedish Liberal Party, minister for international development co-operation, minister for immigration, prime minister from 1978 to 1979, and finally, minister of foreign affairs from 1979 to 1983. He was also ambassador to Canada, from 1983 to 1989 and to Italy, from 1989 to 1996.

Ambassador Ullsten's commitments include the following roles: chair of a Working Group on Global Deforestation Trends, co-chair of The European Forum for Forest Protection, co-ordinating member of a Review Team on the Tropical Forest Action Plan and co-chair of the independent World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development.

Ambassador Ullsten has also been a member, since 1983, of the InterAction Council, a think tank of some 30 former heads of government or state, and he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Woods Hole Research Center.
