The objective of the Congress is to encourage integrative thinking towards managing for ecosystem health. The program will bring together internationally recognized scholars from a wide variety of disciplines, as well as representatives from government agencies, nonprofit organizations, corporations and ecosystem-related professions. There will be analytical discussion sessions on issues concerning ecosystem health, with Congress recommendations being developed.

The three themes for the Congress are:

The Science and Technology of Assessing Ecosystem Health
Political, Cultural and Economic Issues Influencing Ecosystem Health
Case Studies and Approaches to Ecosystem Management

The program should appeal to those within a broad range of scholarly and management-oriented interests, including scientists in the biological, physical, and social sciences and those in the professional realms of environmental protection, ecosystem management, human and veterinary medicine, and agriculture.

Features of the Congress include the following:

Technical Sessions
Integration of contemporary research from multiple disciplines and compelling case studies to form technical sessions that each span the range from research to management of ecosystem health.
Examples of technical session topics are:
Coastal and marine ecosystems
The agricultural/ecosystem interface
Human health and ecosystem health
Transportation corridors and ecosystem health
Ecosystem effects from invasive species
Global change and ecosystem health
Opportunities for active participation by Congress registrants:
Analytical discussion sessions on issues concerning ecosystem health
Satellite meetings hosted by professional societies and agencies
Structured or guided poster sessions
Field trips to highlight case studies of ecosystem management (e.g., Lake Tahoe)
