Faculty in the School of Veterinary Medicine are invited
to submit new or continuation proposals for funding for Temporary Hatch,
Multi-State Research (formerly known as Regional Research), Bovine Abortion
and Endemic Disease projects. All new requests for Temporary Hatch
projects must include the required CRIS forms. ALL continuation requests
(for all fund sources) must include a progress report.
TEMPORARY HATCH
Continuation requests must be submitted using the pre-approved Hatch title.
The development of a new project proposal must be brought to the attention
of the Office of Research (752-6865), for School approval and required
paperwork. The approval process for a Temporary Hatch project involves
submission of the required program forms to DANR and subsequently to the
USDA for final approval.
These funds are part of a State/Federal Program. The Division of Agriculture
and Natural Resources (DANR) makes the allocation to the SVM each year.
Projects must be approved by the SVM, DANR and USDA/CSREES in Washington
before projects can be funded. The historic total allocation for all
projects of funding each year is approximately $23,000. The level of
funding each year is determined by DANR and
that office has the option for input into which projects should be funded.
MULTI-STATE RESEARCH (Formerly known as Regional Research)
Continuation requests must be submitted using the approved Multi-State
Research project title. Our office can provide advice and guidance to
faculty interested in joining an ongoing regional project.
This program is also part of a State/Federal Program. In order to be
a part of a Multi-State Research Program, faculty must develop a work
plan that fits into a national multi-state five-year plan on a targeted
subject matter area. Participating faculty are expected to attend an annual
meeting where progress of projects that fit with the targeted objectives
of the 5-year program plans are evaluated. Project approval and funding
is through DANR and USDA/CSREES. The total level of funding to the SVM
for research projects is approximately $40,000.
According to CFAH policy, a total of $10,000 is set
aside annually to provide travel funds for PI's with approved Multi-State Research
projects. PI's may annually request up to $1,500 in travel funds to
attend a Multi-State Research meeting or workshop. Requests for travel
funds should NOT be included in the annual request for project funds,
but rather should be submitted in a separate letter addressed to Juanita
Humphrey, Assistant Dean. Requests for Multi-State Research travel funds
should be submitted by May 16, 2008.
ENDEMIC DISEASES
New or continuation proposals will be accepted. This aspect of the CFAH
Program is to address high priority food animal health issues and
problems of livestock and poultry producers of California which have
recently been established by the Food Animal Stakeholder Workgroup.
Commodity targets for allocations are derived from the annually published
California Agricultural Resource Directory. The targets are based
on the California cash income by commodities and commodity groups.
The current commodity targets are Dairy (49%), Beef (17%), Poultry
(20%), and other commodities (14%).
BOVINE ABORTION
Research proposals which fit into a collaborative study on the cause and/or
control of epizootic bovine abortion(s) are sought. New or continuation
requests will be accepted. Funding for this program resulted from a line
item appropriation from the State to address Epizootic Bovine Abortion.
These discretionary funds are used to address project plans developed
by faculty working on the EBA problem. For the most part, the funds are
used for this purpose. This State appropriation has been consistent over
the years at the $46,229 level.
APPLICATION PROCESS
In the allocation process, Hatch, Multi-State, and Epizootic Bovine Abortion
projects that have the highest priority will be funded first. The
remaining unfunded projects will be funded by commodity, on a priority
score basis. All requests for CFAH funding must be submitted on
forms CFAH-1, 2, 3 and 4, up to a maximum of $30,000. These forms,
as well as the CRIS forms for new proposals, may be obtained from
our web site here.
Continuing proposals for projects funded on 06-07 must include a progress
report and publications resulting from PI's research. The forms can
now be completed in Adobe Acrobat or MS Word. Please submit an original
plus one copy to the Office of Research by Friday,
May 16, 2008. THERE WILL BE NO EXTENSIONS. Questions may be
addressed to Juanita Humphrey at 530-752-6865 or Bonne London at
530-752-0549.
