Preventative Equine Medicine Symposium
May 13, 2006
The SCAEEP annual symposium on May 13, 2006, covered Preventative Equine Medicine. Topics include preventing colic, dental and orthopedic problems through nutrition, behavior management, footcare, and vaccination/deworming protocols.
Proceeds from the symposium will go to help fund wetlabs and other activities, as well as to help send students to the annual AAEP Convention in December (this last year, 18 students attended in Seattle, WA!) and when possible, to the annual AAEP Opportunities in Equine Practice seminar for 3rd year veterinary students.
The symposium this year was a success. With approximately 40 people attending, we had an informative morning of lectures by UCD faculty and residents. The afternoon featured a tour of the equine part of the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, including watching a horse run in the new Equine Performance laboratory. We also had a number of tables set up to learn about shoeing, toxic plant identification, colic prevention, nutrition, physical exams, and many other topics.
