History of the Clinic
UC Davis veterinary students Randy Singer and Dori Borjesson founded the Mercer Veterinary Clinic for the Homeless in August 1992. The clinic was modeled, in part, after a similar operation in Seattle, WA. The clinic was named after a fictional character with an ability to share an empathetic response. The students were determined to strengthen and lengthen the special bond between the homeless people and their animals. Their goal was to address a largely unrecognized segment of society while providing the students with hands-on experience.
