From genetic breakthroughs to animal welfare and food safety, we're proud of the success the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine has realized in its short history. And we're excited about the new frontiers that we have yet to explore. As we look ahead, we are committed to sustaining and strengthening the school's excellence by respecting tradition and embracing innovation. We are pursuing our vision along five parallel paths:
Creating a contemporary educational and research environment
The School of Veterinary Medicine is in the home stretch of a decade-long capital
initiative that, along with state and campus support, helped to fund five new buildings in
UC Davis' burgeoning Health Sciences District. These contemporary facilities have
addressed accreditation issues and brought students and faculty together in a more
collaborative setting. Continued focus on facilities, particularly of the school's Veterinary
Medical Teaching Hospital, will underscore our commitment to excellence in education,
teaching and clinical care.
Supporting the next generation of veterinarians
UC Davis recruits the best and brightest students with a deep commitment to animal
health and well-being. While the school's rigorous education program itself is
challenging, the biggest hurdle many students face is an enormous financial burden.
Declining government funding contributes to fee hikes and poses a barrier to a veterinary
education for many people. Upon graduation, many graduates face a student loan debt of
more than $100,000.
Thanks to the generosity of numerous benefactors, the school has been able to provide financial assistance to many students in need. By growing our scholarship endowment, we can continue to attract outstanding students and lessen the financial burden they carry when they embark on their careers.
Recruiting and retaining faculty
An exceptional university is distinguished by exceptional faculty. The School of
Veterinary Medicine seeks to add to its cadre of talent by recruiting and retaining
additional faculty from diverse disciplines. One crucial edge in recruitment is endowed
chairs and professorships - the hallmarks of academic excellence for both their holders
and the university. Faculty who hold these distinctions are often pioneers for advanced
initiatives, attracting high caliber colleagues and students to their programs.
Bolstering research to save animal lives
Researchers at the School of Veterinary Medicine depend on philanthropic support for
much of their work. More than $60 million in charitable gifts over the past decade have
funded studies in genetics, orthopedics and cancer, among other areas, with results that
have benefited animals and sometimes even extended to human health. Support for general medicine and surgery research has led to new techniques and protocols that
minimize trauma and accelerate recovery.
Serving local and global communities
The school is committed to service of the highest level - service that enhances the quality
of life for animals, people and the environment. Many of our invaluable programs and
services require charitable support to survive. Private funds support a range of critical
services, such as advising animal shelters, removing abandoned fishing gear from the
ocean, and lending an ear to pet owners grieving the loss of a beloved friend.
