Large Animal Lift

The UC Davis Large Animal Lift (LAL) was designed by the same team who created the UC Davis Anderson Sling, the gold standard in large animal lifting equipment. The basic nature of the LAL makes it practical for use by large animal rescue teams and emergency personnel alike. It is a lightweight, simple to use, affordable piece of equipment which has already saved a number of horses lives.

The LAL provides for the following:

  • Lifting horses who are down by using a tractor, a back hoe or other overhead device
  • Anesthesia recovery assistance
  • Pulling recumbent horses from stalls or trailers
  • Lifting or pulling horses stuck in mud, ravines, etc.
  • Lifting weak older horses that get down and can't rise
  • Preventing horses with pelvic injuries or other orthopedic injuries from lying down
  • Pulling horses to a skid device and then lifting out of many difficult circumstances

Veterinarians frequently encounter patients with neurologic, trauma and muscle disorders, as well as patients that are having difficulty standing post-anesthesia. The LAL can be applied to the non-sedated animal using one or two people and the animal lifted for evaluation and treatment. A recent review of the LAL in 15 cases determined that the device is "simple to use and effective in lifting horses." Additionally, horses struggling to rise during anesthesia recovery have been assisted to their feet successfully using the LAL. This new device is changing the face of equine medicine and surgery.

Recently the UC Davis LAL was used to airlift a horse down a deep ravine in New Zealand. Attending NZ veterinarian Dr. Kirstie Pickles of Massey University has just attended a equine helicopter rescue training sponsored by VERT at the Marine Mountain Warfare unit in the Sierra Mountains.
