At the School of Veterinary Medicine we make the world a better place for animals. The many programs and activities of the school all involve improving animal wellbeing. A group of faculty representing the major animal species and veterinary disciplines formed the IAWTI to promote activities focusing on animal welfare issues. The institute brings animal welfare issues to the forefront of veterinary education and engages students, faculty, and staff in educational forums focusing on aspects of animal welfare.
The IAWTI is coordinating efforts involving livestock, horses, companion animals, and wildlife in an effort to identify important areas in need of further efforts to improve animal wellbeing through education and research. By providing an unbiased view of animal welfare issues we can carefully examine potential solutions and needs for further research to make the right decisions on behalf of animals. We have the ability to check the facts, identify where knowledge and accurate information is missing and target research to answer important questions which lead to improvements in the lives of animals.
