First Responder Guidelines for Equine Emergencies:
Level 1
One day, 8 hour course
Synopsis:
This course is California's introductory course for first responders on safely managing equine emergencies. This course will focus on introducing the first responder to the safest measures when dealing with down, injured, trapped and loose livestock and wildlife.
Training includes:
- Awareness of type and frequency of equine emergencies encountered
- Initial steps to be taken upon arrival and scene assessment
- Awareness of inherent dangers of working with stressed horses
- Skills and knowledge to prevent equine related injuries to the public
and rescuer - Review of the Incident Command System (ICS)
- Introduction to Equine Behavior as it relates to safety of responding
personnel - Provide knowledge and hands on experience with unique equipment usedfor capture, restraint, lifting, dragging, assisting to stand of stranded
equines - Learn what resources are available to accomplish a technical rescue
- Learn how to properly relocate a recumbent equine patient using
specialized equipment or local resources - Expectation of dense media coverage and PIO information suggestions
- Legal aspects related to animal incidents
Course will use equine manikins and live horses

This course is California's introductory course for first responders on safely managing loose livestock and injured wildlife emergencies. This course will focus on introducing the first responder to the safest measures when dealing with down, injured, trapped and loose livestock and wildlife.
- Understand how to approach livestock or wildlife emergencies
- Be introduced to capture and immobilization (corralling, darting, etc.)
- Learn what threats exist for first responders and to avoid
personal bodily harm - Learn suitable methods for euthanasia
- Learn how to perform humane euthanasia
- Learn about laws related to disposal of euthanized animals
