Jim Green coaches sVERT club members on equine rescue techniques with Rescue Randy, our life size equine mannequin.

sVERT is a veterinary student led club, dedicated to disaster preparedness.

The students recruit UC Davis faculty, private practitioners, emergency managers and other stakeholders to provide lectures, case studies and hands-on laboratories in disaster medicine as well as seeking external service and outreach opportunities as their schedules allow.

In May 2017, over 65 students completed the pilot extracurricular specialized study program on disaster medicine. Students completed three core lectures on Agency authority/Incident Command System, Biosecurity, and Humane Euthanasia. Students then chose companion animal track, large animal track or mixed track (both tracks) with additional four lectures covering Animal Handling/Restraint/Movement, Evacuation, Sheltering and Triage. The majority of participants chose mixed track. During the hands-on lab day, the students completed a companion animal sheltering tabletop exercise and rotated through three stations learning large animal rescue techniques.
