The IAWTI and Nicaragua

On February 5 the IAWTI hosted the first in a series of on-line conferences planning animal welfare training and development in Nicaragua.  Dr. Eric Davis of the IAWTI moderated the discussion, which included UCDSVM students and staff interested in projects in Nicaragua.  International Veterinary Outreach, the One Health Initiative, and Rural Veterinary Experience Teaching and Service were represented.  Additionally, veterinarians representing other animal welfare NGO’s from Michigan, Colorado, and North Dakota “tuned in” to the discussion, using IAWTI’s Adobe Connect account.  Perhaps most significantly, Dr. Faran Dometz, co-founder of the Nicaraguan veterinary group Nica Vets, was able to bring his crucial expertise to the virtual table from his office in Masaya, Nicaragua.  These conferences will held on a monthly basis, and will be expanded to include more organizations in both the USA and Nicaragua.  All those interested in improving animal welfare conditions and livestock health in Central America are invited to attend.  If you are interested please contact Dr. Davis at ewdavis@ucdavis.edu.  Our goal is to improve program effectiveness and efficiency by collaboration in the areas of teaching, community involvement, and logistics.
