funding for international opportunities

Usually veterinary students are eligible for these funds starting at the end of their first year, and therefore may make application during the first year of veterinary school. In general there are two sources of funding. One source may be used for both externships (often clinical) and research projects. The other type of funding is exclusively for use in research projects, which may be either domestic or international. The best general source of information is the Student Programs' SVM "Scholarships and Awards" booklet which is prepared each year around November and distributed to all students.

Externships and research projects available for UCD Davis DVM students are listed in the Opportunities sections of this web site. Research projects are eligible for a higher funding level and can be very rewarding but are more difficult to organize. They require a faculty mentor or mentors at UC Davis, international contacts and/or mentors and a research project that would be submitted for funding. It is a challenge to organize a research project from a distance and to then implement it in a foreign country. However, students have found this experience extremely rewarding. An often successful strategy is to make a short trip one summer to the desired site as a scouting trip to ferret out different research possibilities, make contacts, and in general begin planning for the project. During the following school year a detailed proposal and letter of confirmation from the host institution is prepared and submitted for funding. If funded, the project may be implemented the following summer.
