Food Animal Medicine and Surgery
This clinical area provides a full spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic
medical and surgical services to livestock, including dairy and beef
cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. Care is enhanced through routine use
of modern diagnostic equipment and monitoring procedures such
as ultrasonography, endoscopy, and electrocardiography. Diagnostic
capabilities are extended further through support from VMTH Imaging
and Diagnostic Laboratory services, diagnostic services provided
through CAHFS, and consultation with specialists in other services.
Food Animal Herd Health and Reproduction
The Food Animal Herd Health and Reproduction Service delivers
reproductive services and herd health medicine care to dairies, beef
ranches, goat herds, and sheep flocks which are regular clients, and
visits these facilities on a regularly scheduled basis. The Service
is also available to help solve herd problems, using the latest in
epidemiological and diagnostic techniques. Appointments at the farm
for groups of animals needing non-emergency services can also be
arranged.
In addition, reproductive soundness exams and fertility exams are
scheduled in the clinic. Assisted reproductive techniques such as
embryo transfer are also available.

Dr. Wakenell is an expert in the immunology and disease
reactions of the avian embryo, and vaccination and
immunomodulation for the prevention of poultry diseases.
