Oiled Wildlife Care Network

Primary Care Facilities

The OWCN utilizes facilities throughout the state to provide care for oil-affected animals. Between 1994 and 2001, the Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) and the OWCN built the Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center, the San Francisco Bay Oiled Wildlife Care and Education Center, the Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care and Education Center, the Marine Wildlife Care Center, and the Oiled Wildlife Care Center. These facilities provide the largest purpose-built, permanent capacity for oil-affected birds, sea otters, and sea turtles in the world. Funds were also provided at that time to upgrade existing facilities throughout the state to further increase this capacity, and additional OWCN funds are allocated on an ongoing basis for construction, renovation, and maintenance of other facilities to improve regional oil spill readiness.
