Become a Spontaneous Volunteer
"Spontanneous" volunteers are unpaid employees of the Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) at the California Department of Fish and Game. You'll sign up with OSPR and attend their required training. OSPR then provides volunteers to work with the OWCN and the various other organizations involved in a spill response. There are many different opportunities for spontaneous volunteers during a spill response; not all opportunities involve working directly with wildlife.
All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and must attend a mandatory introductory and safety presentation. You'll have to sign an Oath of Allegiance to the State of California, along with other required paperwork.
Procedures During Oil Spills
During oil spills, call OSPR's volunteer hotline at (800) 228-4544 to find out about scheduled trainings.
If possible, please download and fill out the following paperwork, and bring copies with you to the Volunteer Orientation
- OWCN Volunteer Information Form
- OSPR Volunteer Information Form
- Oath of Allegiance
- Volunteer Service Agreement
