Externships
Externships provide off-campus work and learning opportunities for veterinary students in private and corporate practices, humane societies, governmental agencies and pharmaceutical/pet food companies. Senior students participating in approved externships receive academic credit. Externship participation prior to the senior year is not for credit, and compensation may or may not be offered.
Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP) (available January 1 - September 1)
The California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) compiles an annual list of veterinary practitioners interested in employing veterinary students in their practices during the summer. The objective of SWEP is to connect veterinarians with veterinary students to gain valuable real-world experience in medicine and practice management. Veterinarians may hire high-quality, knowledgeable veterinary students; students can gain valuable work experience and minimize debt load.
To review practitioner applications and obtain contact information,
go to the CVMA web site. Enter the "Members"
section using your CVMA student member number, then go to "Allied
Organizations/Veterinary Students." Online information will be available February 2006. A binder containing hard copies
of SWEP listings is availbable at the Student Programs office.
