Robert Derlet, M.D.
Medicine: Emergency Medicine

Dr. Derlet conducts research on water quality in wilderness areas of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, including Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. He has been active in Wilderness Medicine Research for the past 20 years.  He first learned about the STAR program from a Vet Student at 12,800 ft on the John Muir Trail. Opportunities for students in this area of research include:

  1. Field Research in the High Sierra Nevada Mountains by collection of wilderness water samples, and observation of watershed conditions, including algae biomass, and factors leading to pollution of streams and lakes.
  2. Learning basic techniques for isolation of coliforms, E-coli, and other microorganisms from water.
  3. Opportunity to involve other UC Davis labs capable of performing nucleic acid analysis or elemental analysis of water samples.
  4. Study zoonosis and risk for humans acquiring disease in wilderness environments.
