N. James MacLachlan, DVM, PhD
VM: Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology

Dr. MacLachlan is a veterinary pathologist and virologist whose research focuses on virus-host interactions in large farm animals, specifically ruminants and horses. These studies run the gamut of basic aspects of pathogenesis of virus diseases like bluetongue and equine viral arteritis, through the molecular characterization of the epidemiology and evolution of the causative viruses. His group is attempting to address emerging virus diseases of veterinary importance, and thus has an expanding program investigating the epidemiology of West Nile virus infection. The training of the next generation of veterinary researchers is one of our highest priorities, thus he has several graduate and aspiring veterinarians in his laboratory working on projects as diverse as Rift Valley Fever (in conjunction with scientists at CDC) and equine viral respiratory disease. Please contact Dr. MacLachlan at njmaclachlan@ucdavis.edu for further information.
