Research Interest:
My primary research interest is comparative oral pathology – the study of oral and dental diseases in various species, including the similarities and differences in nature and occurrence of these diseases.
The examination of mammalian skull collections for dental lesions is an established method of determining the nature and prevalence of dental pathology in a particular species. If performed correctly, such studies can reveal valuable information pertaining not only to the dental diseases occurring in the species, but also to systemic diseases, diet, and behavior. Such studies may also contribute to the understanding of oral diseases in related domestic species.
The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco is a treasure-trove of skulls and within driving distance from Davis. Its Department of Ornithology and Mammalogy is eager to make its collection available for studies in comparative dental pathology.
Potential Projects for STAR Students:
The dental pathology of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis)
The dental pathology of the mountain lion (Puma concolor)
The dental pathology of the bobcat (Lynx rufus)
