Dr. Barthold is a veterinary experimental pathologist. He and his group are investigating host responses to Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, using a mouse model. In addition, he is investigating the pathogenesis of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis in a mouse model, as well as developing diagnostic assays for murine Helicobacters. He is launching a new research direction using a mouse model of Bartonella henselae. Dr. Barthold’s research group brings together expertise in experimental pathology, molecular biology, microbiology and immunology. This research has resulted in development of a recombinant vaccine for Lyme disease in humans and animals, and has uncovered several novel mechanisms of bacterial persistence in the immunologically responsive host.
