Dr. Baumgarth is a veterinarian and research immunologist with broad interests in infectious disease immunology. A major focus of her research involves studies on the regulation of early antiviral immune responses to influenza virus. Ongoing work is directed towards identifying potential roles for lung tissue dendritic cells in the regulation of the adaptive immunity, and identification of the earliest events that trigger antiviral B cells responses. She is also involved in collaborative studies with Dr. Barthold to delineate the B cell responses to the Lyme disease pathogen Borreliaburgdorferi and with a number of investigators in the Department of Stomatology, UCSF, where she holds an adjunct appointment, and collaborates on studying the effects of HIV infection on mucosal immunity in the oral cavity.
