Counseling Services

Counseling services are free for registered VETMED students, confidential, and intended to be as accessible as possible. The counseling office is located at 172 Schalm Hall

Individual and couples therapy services are available 5 days a week with a wide range of appointment times to accommodate VETMED student availability: early-morning, noon appointments, and early-evening appointments. (see Making an Appointment section below)

Drop-in hours are available Monday through Friday from 1pm - 2 pm for students, faculty, and staff.   Drop-in hours can be used to obtain information about counseling services for VETMED students, to request information on methods for helping a colleague/friend who may be in need of mental health assistance, or making requests for specific trainings or programming for a class, club, or other organization on campus.

Group therapy services will be provided, as requested, on the VETMED campus to provide supportive services and skill building exercises.

Psycho-education and Wellness Programming are provided when requested by students, faculty, and staff. Examples of programming include stress and wellness presentations, methods for recognizing and responding to students in distress, and methods for communicating effectively with colleagues and supervisors in a professional setting.

Making an Appointment

Email us at vetmedcaps@ucdavis.edu and include all of your available open times for an appointment (days of the week and times of the day). We will work to schedule an appointment with one of the VETMED Counselors at the VETMED counseling office (172 Schalm Hall).

Additionally, you can call us at (530) 752-2349 for an appointment. This is the general appointment line for all of Student Health and Counseling Services. Be sure to indicate that you are a VETMED student to ensure that you will be scheduled with a counselor at the VETMED counseling office. You can also schedule an appointment on the main campus if you do not want to be seen in the VETMED office. Please indicate that you would like to be seen on the main cmapus when scheduling that appointment.

Urgent Mental Health Needs

Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) offers mental health urgent care services on the first floor of the Student Health & Wellness Center during normal hours of operation.

For urgent needs you can call or walk in to speak with an advice/triage nurse (530) 752-2349. The nurse will discuss your concerns and determine if urgent care is appropriate.
