Career Diversity

Applicants with demonstrated knowledge and experience and career interest in avian science/medicine (poultry), population medicine and public health, food animal medicine, food safety, lab animal medicine, fish medicine, comparative medicine, or graduate academic education can apply for admissions using the Career Diversity Form.

Food Animal Speciality Track (FASTVet)

This is a type of career diversity but uses a different FASTVet form.  FASTVet is a partnership  and collaboration with Animal Science Departments to attract and retain students in the areas of food animal veterinary medicine that will allow the profession to meet the veterinary needs of animal agriculture, agribusiness and the statewide need for veterinarians in public health, and food safety positions.

Criteria for FASTVet Student Recruitment:

Academic Requirements:

  • Student must meet the Schools requirements for admission to the DVM program;
  • Must have a minimum required science (as stated in UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Admissions Requirements) GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.2 for the last 45 units.Must have a combined percentile GRE score of 70 or higher;
  • Must have completed two (upper or lower) Animal Production courses at time of application;
  • Must have completed an upper division course in Nutrition;
  • Must have completed a minimum of two of the four required upper division courses in Nutrition, Biochemistry, Genetics and Physiology upon application, and the remaining two upper division courses completed by the end of the fall term;
  • Must have documented and substantial hands on experience in food animal. Experience must include working with a food animal veterinarian- experience may also include some research experience related to food animals; and
  • Must have a minimum of one letter of support from a food animal veterinarian.

 If criteria are met, applicants will be guaranteed an interview with the UC Davis Veterinary School Admissions Committee.

How to Apply:

  • Submit supplemental FASTVet form (www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu) to the School of Veterinary Medicine.  You must also submit the VMCAS application and required documents for the VMCAS application.  Please Note: You do not need to submit the Career Diversity Form. Those applicants that want to be considered as having demonstrated experience and knowledge in food animal but do not meet all the criteria for FastVet can submit the Career Diversity Form.

Veterinary Scientist Training Program (VSTP)

The Veterinary Scientist Training Program (VSTP) is designed to train the next generation of veterinary scientists. UC Davis combines a rich pre-clinical and clinical training with a strong commitment to basic and clinical research. Particular strengths include the Center for Comparative Medicine, our Cancer Research Program (UC Davis has recently achieved the National Cancer Institutes prestigious designation as a Cancer Center), a world recognized Neuroscience Research Center and our Biomedical Engineering Program. The emerging Genomics Center and our strong integration with the Western Human Nutrition Research Group as well as the Shriner's Hospital provide a tremendous wealth of talented investigators and infrastructure for cutting edge research in a wide variety of fields.
