Applications for the statewide William C. Reeves New Investigator Award will be accepted through Friday December 7, 2007. The award, memorializing Dr. William C. Reeves, a renowned University of California entomologist, is sponsored by the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC) and the University of California Mosquito Research Program (UCMRP). The award, which consists of $1,000 in cash and a plaque, is for the best scientific paper submitted and presented at the annual MVCAC conference in Palm Springs in January 13-16, 2008. The second-place winner will receive a $500 cash award, and the third-place winner, $250.

Eligibility

Awardee must be an undergraduate or graduate student at a college or university in California, or a post-graduate scientist who has received his or her degree no more than three years before submission of the scientific paper for consideration. The post-graduate scientist must be employed within the state of California and must be working within the general field of biology and control of vectors or vector-borne diseases. The paper submitted for consideration must also address a subject in this area. Although the awardee must not necessarily be the sole author of the paper submitted, he or she must be the senior author, or his or her role in the study upon which the paper is based must be such that senior authorship is fully warranted. Specific questions regarding eligibility of an individual will be resolved by the Reeves New Investigator Award Committee.

Judgment Criteria

The award will be based on the quality of the study upon which the paper is based, the quality of the written report, and the quality of the presentation made at the annual conference.

Procedures

  • The manuscript shall be such that it can be presented orally in a 15-minute time period. A statement attesting to the applicant's eligibility for the award and signed by the applicant's department chairperson or equivalent must accompany the manuscript.

  • The Reeves New Investigator Award Committee will select papers from among those submitted for presentation at the annual conference of the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California, to be held January 13 to January 16, 2008 at the Wyndham Palm Springs Hotel, 888 Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs. Based on the selection criteria described above, the committee will select a first-, second-, and third-place paper after hearing all of the presentations at the conference. The presenter of the first-place paper will be given the Reeves New Investigator Award.

  • Awards will be announced at the time of the annual conference, usually at the banquet. Plaques signifying first, second, and third place will be awarded at that time. It is understood that papers selected for presentation at the conference will be published in the conference proceedings, and cash awards will be provided by MVCAC only after suitable manuscripts have been submitted by awardees.
