DAVIS - A UC Davis insect expert has won an international award for his work investigating mosquitoes and the diseases they spread.

Robert K. Washino, a medical entomologist, won the coveted Harry Hoogstraal Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Entomology. He was honored earlier this month in Washington, D.C., during the annual meeting of the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Washino, a Sacramento native, is a global authority on the biology of mosquitoes, the diseases they spread to animals and humans and the agents used to control them. Although he retired from the university 13 years ago, he has been called back to serve three times, most recently as chairman of the entomology department. He also serves on the board of the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District.

The Hoogstraal medal, named for a pioneering expert in tick-borne diseases, has been given to 14 entomologists since 1987. In 2004, the award went to UC Davis entomologist John Edman.
