Q: Has the strain of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus that causes increased sow abortions and deaths been reported in California?
A: Yes. At least one herd in California has reported signs and serology consistent with this strain. The best protection against infection is good biosecurity. Review your program with your local veterinarian and pay special attention to the quarantine of new herd additions, access by outside people and equipment, and traffic flow on your premises.
