Egg rack cleaning and disinfection systems

Cleaning egg racks is difficult, but critically important to prevent the entry of disease agents to the farm. The same principles of cleaning and disinfection apply to egg racks that apply to all other equipment on the poultry farm.

Organic material must be removed before disinfection can be effective. The device shown is the innovative and cost-effective invention of one egg producer/processor determined to clean and disinfect egg racks leaving his plant.

Egg racks enter the wash system from the processing plant. The empty egg rack is rolled up over ramps onto the wash tracks that are filled with disinfectant.

The wheel wash track is constructed of two parallel sections of channel iron that are welded together with cross members. At the center of one of the channel iron sections is a welded handle, so that the system can be portable and placed at any location where wheel disinfection is desired.

Complete egg rack disinfection

For complete egg rack disinfection, a semi trailer was modified and fitted with the wheel wash track described above. Egg racks are rolled onto the track and then are hand sprayed with a high-pressure system that has a disinfectant proportioner attached.

After cleaning and disinfection, egg racks should be allowed to dry before they are placed into clean areas of a poultry ranch.

Inspection of egg racks after cleaning and disinfection

As with any cleaning and disinfection program, egg racks should be fully inspected for residues of organic material before they are returned to use. One of the most critical areas for examination is the area around the wheels. The wheels are an excellent means of tracking disease agents from one place to another and should be critically examined for cleanliness.
