Poultry Health and Food Safety Programs

Objective: Contribute to the quality and safety of poultry products through development of pre- and post-harvest food safety production systems and effective, appropriate disease
prevention strategies.
Approach: Provide statewide UC Cooperative Extension education,
research, and training in flock health management, production and safety
of poultry products as human food.
Conduct research encompassing the
traditional domestic poultry species: broiler chickens, turkeys, ducks,
laying hens and gamebird species such as squab, pheasant and quail.
Research studies emphasize the pathology, pathogenesis, epidemiology and
immunology of infectious diseases of poultry and of pathogens with food
safety significance.
Yearly symposia for the poultry industry emphasize timely/popular topics
of interest such as:
- 1997 Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Food
Safety Program
- 1998 Respiratory Health Management Program
