Cow-Calf Quality Assurance Program (The Solution)
John Maas, Veterinary Medicine Extension, UC Davis; Jim Oltjen, Animal Science Extension, UC Davis; UC Cooperative Extension Livestock Farm
Advisors
Since 1994, more than 4,000 California cattlemen and women have been
trained in subject areas including food quality and safety, animal health,
animal handling, record keeping, and Total Quality Management.
This program developed as a natural extension of earlier UC Cooperative
Extension activities that contributed to the California Cattlemen's
Association's (CCA) Feeder Council Quality Certification Program.
Designed to be a local program, county-based Livestock Farm Advisors
coordinate with local cattlemen's organizations and other interested
parties to develop the interest and secure an audience, and to lead the
program with the assistance of extension specialists and local private
veterinary practitioners. The Quality Assurance Program has several
individual educational programs:
Basic Quality Assurance Program (QAP)
Advanced Cattle Health
Genetics
A developing program on the topic of "on-farm" Hazard Analysis of
Critical Control Points (HACCP)
