Faculty in Animal Genomics

Bannasch Lab

We are a collegial productive group of faculty, dedicated to graduate student education, with a wide diversity of research in animal genomics. Here is a little about who we are and what we do (name, department, areas of interest).

Danika Bannasch Associate Professor of Genetics - Department of Population Health & Reproduction (School of Vet Med)'; Canine and equine inherited diseases

Mary Delany Professor, Developmental Genetics and Chair of Department of Animal Science; Avian genome: organization and cytogenetics; repetitive and non-repetitive coding and non-coding sequences.

Holly Ernest Assistant Professor in Residence, Genetics for Wildlife Population Health - Department of Population Health & Reproduction (Vet Med) and Veterinary Genetics Laboratory; Ecological genetics; wildlife diseases; threatened and endangered species; hummingbirds; raptors (birds of prey); corvids (magpies, crows, jays); wild mammals of California.

Thomas R. Famula Professor and Vice Chair of Department of Animal Science. Quantitative genetics and animal breeding, including the development of breeding programs for animals. Genetics of canine diseases, particularly deafness and epilepsy.

Russ Hovey Associate Professor. Department of Animal Science. Chair of GGG Animal Genomics Focus Group; Molecular and endocrine regulation of mammary gland growth and function as it relates to processes ranging from normal development and lactation to abnormal states such as breast cancer.

Sree Kanthaswamy Professional Researcher, Primate Center and Department of Anthropology; Forensic Genetics, Population Genetics and Genetic Management of Captive and Wild Primate Populations

Artyom Kopp Assistant Professor, Evolution and Ecology (College of Biological Sciences) and Center for Genetics and Development. Developmental and evolutionary genetics to understand the origin of new phenotypes and ecological adaptations.

Dietmar Kueltz  Associate Professor of Physiological Genomics - Department of Animal Science; Environmental physiology and genomics of fishes and Daphnia; evolution of environmental stress-tolerance at the cellular level and in aquatic animals; molecular adaptations of mammalian kidney cells to osmotic stress

Leslie Lyons Associate Professor of Genetics - Department of Population Health & Reproduction (School of Vet Med); Genetic tools for companion animals and analyzing inherited diseases in cats, dogs, horses and primates

Bernie May Adjunct Professor - Department of Animal Science; Director, Genomic Variation Laboratory; Population genetics, conservation genetics, genomic manipulation, genomic mapping. Use of molecular markers to answer biological questions relative to population structure, linkage of molecular traits.

Juan F. Medrano Professor - Department of Animal Science; Study of the genetic architecture of growth and obesity traits in mice and domestic animals. Technologies used: congenic lines, eQTL gene expression analysis with microarrays and Real Time PCR, NMR metabolomics, high trhoughput genotyping and phenotyping. Genetic modification of the protein and fatty acid composition of milk. Technologies: SNP discovery, SNP analysis and association studies, and microarrays.
