Programs in companion animal medicine
focus on diseases seen in a wide variety of species including
dogs, cats, birds, fish and small mammals. Within the
disciplinary umbrella of medicine, further specialization occurs
lines and along organ systems. Organ systems specialization
has lead to programs in internal medicine including nephrology,
urology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, dermatology and cardiology.
Additional programs in virology, immunology and infectious diseases
span both species and organ system specialization. Within
all of these diverse disciplines, both teaching and research
emphasis is placed on disease diagnosis, treatment, prevention
and control.
Research endeavors within areas of
specialization but are not limited to:
- Companion animal medicine: chronic renal failure,
hemodialysis, urolithiasis, urinary microbiology, urinary
incontinence, hyperadrenocorticism, diabetes mellitus, thyroid
disease, intestinal mucosal barriers and cancer cahexia.
- Dermatology: bacterial diseases, auto-immune diseases,
allergy and improvements in therapy.
- Cardiology: heart failure, taurine deficiencies,
ultrasonography and congenital heart disease.
- Virology, immunology and infectious diseases: retroviral
diseases, antiviral drug therapy, animal models for human
AIDS, Feline immunodeficiency virus pathogenesis and vaccines.
