UC Davis is the first Veterinary PCR Diagnostic Laboratory offering Real-time (RT) PCR for a broad palette of species including dogs, cats, horses, birds and ruminants. Real-Time PCR is the most sensitive technique for nucleic acid detection via the generation of a fluorescent signal. The laboratory setup, including separation-of-workflow, and stringent quality control procedures, along with standardized protocols increase accuracy and reduce the risk of contamination. Our highly knowledgeable and trained DVM’s are available to discuss any questions along with help of interpretation of PCR results.
Emerging Disease – Equine Coronavirus
Don’t know much about equine coronavirus (ECoV)? You’re not alone! Recent research from 2011 and 2012, however, has shed some light on this little known virus. Patients infected with ECoV commonly have unspecific clinical signs such as fever, lethargy, and anorexia. Less commonly, colic and changes in fecal character can occur. Although generally self-limiting, secondary infections due to gastrointestinal translocation can take place causing more severe complications, even death. Currently, molecular detection of the virus in feces is the only diagnostic method available. At the Real-time PCR Core Facility we offer ECoV as a standalone test, and as part of a comprehensive Equine GI/Diarrhea Panel (ECoV, Lawsonia intracellularis, Potomac Horse Fever, Salmonella spp, and Clostridium difficile toxins A and B). Results are relayed quickly, which means you can make a diagnosis and start treatment promptly. Because ECoV is contagious, rapid diagnosis means proper biosecurity measures can be implemented to prevent disease spread.
