Sample Submission Form and Instructions
UC Davis is the first Veterinary PCR Diagnostic Laboratory offering Real-time (RT) PCR for a broad palette of species including dogs, cats, horses, birds and ruminants. Real-Time PCR is the most sensitive technique for nucleic acid detection via the generation of a fluorescent signal. The laboratory setup, including separation-of-workflow, and stringent quality control procedures, along with standardized protocols increase accuracy and reduce the risk of contamination. Our highly knowledgeable and trained DVM’s are available to discuss any questions along with help of interpretation of PCR results.
Cost–effective environmental and patient testing for IDC programs
The Real-time PCR Research and Diagnostics Core Facility is proud to offer the first diagnostic infectious disease control program to support cost-effective environmental and patient testing at your hospital. Three pre-established testing options include combinations of Salmonella spp, Clostridium difficile (toxins A and B), EHV-1, EHV-4, S.equi, EIV and EAV, and are available at a significantly reduced price for bulk submissions (greater than 10 samples submitted at one time). Biosecurity programs protect the health of patients by limiting exposure to potentially infectious agents. In hospital settings this is extremely important as immune compromised patients are even more susceptible to infection. Enteric and respiratory disease can spread by direct contact with infected patients, transient subclinical shedders, contaminated feed, bedding and equipment. Performing weekly or biweekly contamination checks of housing, equipment and feed will reduce the likelihood of spreading disease. Because contamination commonly occurs at low levels, a highly sensitive method of testing needs to be used. Real-time PCR is sensitive enough to detect low copies of the target pathogens, and allows for a speedy turn-around time.

We are currently implementing selenite broth enrichment protocol for all samples submitted for Salmonella spp testing. Please refer to our brochure for further information.
