Visiting Veterinary Students
The faculty and staff of the William Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) strive to be as accommodating as possible toward visitors, yet their primary concern must be to maintain the quality of our teaching & service programs. Visiting students are often given responsibility for treatments, data entry into the medical record and client communications. The performance and behavior of a visiting student reflects on the VMTH. It is VMTH policy that each Service must give approval for any outside student who wishes to spend time in that Service. Thus, all students must apply to the VMTH Director's Office and be accepted individually by the Service in which they hope to participate.
All arrangements must be made through the VMTH Director's Office by contacting Judy Wall at jawall@ucdavis.edu. Applicable policies are outlined below.
- Students who are in their final year of Veterinary School will be given priority. During the summer, we may accept U.S. students who are between their second and third or third and fourth years, and overseas students who are between their third and fourth, or fourth and fifth years of veterinary school.
- Acceptance is contingent upon availability of places in the requested clinical rotation or Service.
- Fees will be waived for up to four weeks of clinical rotations for students from AVMA accredited Schools or Colleges that offer similar exchange opportunities to UC Davis students. Students will be accepted without fees provided that the student's home institution has a veterinary medical teaching hospital that can/will reciprocally accept UC Davis students under the same guidelines. Students who require evaluation will be evaluated using our hospital's evaluation system.
- A fee of $1050.00 per week will typically be charged to students from Schools or Colleges that are not AVMA accredited or cannot provide similar exchange opportunities to UC Davis students.
- Fee waivers may be granted under extraordinary circumstances at the discretion of the Service Chief and the VMTH Director.
- Room and board is not included in the fee listed above. It is expected that students will arrange their own travel and accommodations; however, information regarding potential accommodations will be made available on request.
- A standard professional liability policy of $1 million is required. If an individual who has made arrangements to visit the VMTH and participate in patient care arrives and does not provide proof of liability insurance, that individual must not be permitted to engage in hands-on care until a liability insurance policy can be obtained. Companies who may provide the insurance for on shore AVMA accredited schools are Wells Fargo Insurance (866-354-5504) or CVMA Insurance Services (888-762-3143).
- Students must be show proof of medical insurance coverage.
- Visiting students must be proficient in spoken and written English to be accepted.
Students from many foreign countries must obtain a visa if they intend to stay in the United States for more than four weeks. Currently an administrative fee of $415 will be charged by the University of California, Davis, for obtaining the documents needed for the visa. Fees for visa documents will be due at the time visa arrangements are made for each individual and will be paid to the VMTH. A visa waiver program exists between the U.S. and some countries, which will allow foreign nationals from those countries to participate in such training without a visa and without incurring an administrative fee. Canadian students may be eligible for a TN visa at a minimal cost if obtained at the port of entry. Foreign nationals should not be invited as guests of the VMTH until visa requirements have been determined; otherwise, the VMTH could be subject to fines imposed by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Students seeking to spend time at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) will need to submit their preferred visit dates, Service they wish to visit, a current CV, and a letter of recommendation via email to Judy Wall at (jawall@ucdavis.edu), in the VMTH Director's Office.

Visiting Veterinarians
Whereas the faculty and staff of the VMTH strive to be as accommodating as possible toward visiting veterinarians, please be advised that space and other limitations may preclude acceptance of visitors to specific Services on specific dates. Requests must be approved by the appropriate Service Chief and the VMTH Director and all arrangements must be made through the VMTH Director's Office.
The following policies and fees apply to visiting veterinarians:
- Veterinarians who are California residents will be charged $159/day or $795/week (equivalent to veterinary student tuition for California residents).
- Veterinarians from outside of California (non-residents), will be charged $210/day or $1050/week (equivalent to student out of state tuition). Fees are due on the first day of the visit and can be paid by cash or credit card.
- A standard professional liability policy of $1 million is required. If an individual who has made arrangements to visit the VMTH and participate in patient care arrives and does not provide proof of liability insurance, that individual must not be permitted to engage in hands-on care until a liability insurance policy can be obtained. Companies that we have worked with before who may be able to provide this insurance are Wells Fargo Insurance (866-354-5504) or CVMA Insurance Services (888-762-3143).
- Room and board is not included in this fee. It is expected that veterinarians will arrange their own travel and accommodation; however, information regarding potential accommodation is available upon request.
- The title of "visiting veterinarian" will be accorded.
- The visiting veterinarian can be given library privileges by obtaining a "Temporary Affiliate Account" through the VMTH Director's Office.
- Veterinarians from some foreign countries will need to obtain a visa if their total stay in the United States will exceed one month. Additional administrative and INS fees associated with visa arrangements may be charged. Fees for visa documents are due at the time document arrangements are made for each individual and should be made payable to the VMTH. Visitors should contact the Director's Office for information on fees and visas.
- The VMTH does not accept veterinarians wishing to complete ECFVG requirements by training at the VMTH.
- The VMTH does not participate in remedial training required by the Veterinary Medical Board (VMB) for veterinarians who have been disciplined.
- During the resident recruitment period (usually September-December) resident applicants visiting for an interview are exempt from fees.
- Nontraditional/Alternative Track residents are veterinarians who are in practice and elect to spend time in VMTH Services to fulfill Specialty Board requirements. If the Nontraditional resident is functioning as an integral part of a Service, helping to deliver patient care, teaching & service, the Service Chief may elect to waive fees. If the Nontraditional/Alternative Track resident visits the VMTH for short blocks of time and does not fully participate in patient care, teaching, service and on-call duties, fees should be charged as defined in 1 and 2 above.
- Veterinarians visiting as part of a sabbatical leave or to participate in research and academic pursuits normally receive a courtesy appointment and register through a department within the School of Veterinary Medicine. If the individual will also work in the VMTH, he or she must report to the VMTH Director's Office to fill out a Visitor's Form. Academic visitors of this type are not typically required to pay fees, but will need the proper visa. In these cases, visa arrangements are the responsibility of the host department within the School.
