Chemistry

Within our chemistry lab, we perform general chemistry, as well as coagulation testing, complete urinalysis, and routine endocrine testing. Our main general chemistry analyzers, the Roche Cobas C501 and C311, allow for automated high volume output with clot and liquid level detection and parallel processing ensuring reliable results. We offer a range of pharmaceutical drug levels for monitoring therapy, NEFA, Beta Hydroxybutyrate, and bile acid measurements in addition to specialized chemistry profiles with reported VMTH generated species specific reference intervals. We also offer a wide range of endocrine and specialized testing on the Immulite 2000. Other chemistry lab analyzers include an automated advanced osmometer, Urisys 1800 urine dipstick reader, Nova-8 Ionized Magnesium analysis, and extensive coagulation assays. We are OFA Thyroid testing approved.

Coagulation The majority of our coagulation analyses are performed on a STAGO Compact Coagulation analyzer. Generalized coagulation and fibrinolysis testing, including but not limited to: PT, PTT Quantitative Fibrinogen, Quantitative D-dimers, Fibrin Degradation Products (FDPs) Anticoagulant Activity: Canine and Equine Antithrombin Von Willebrand Factor antigen

Endocrinology Many tests are performed on our Immulite 2000 analyzer.

  • Adrenocortical Axis Tests: Endogeneous ACTH, ACTH stimulation test, resting cortisol, urine cortisol, Low and High Dose Dexamethasone suppression tests
  • Thyroid Tests: TSH, T4, TGAA (performed on Wednesday), Free T4
  • GI/Pancreatic Tests: Insulin, B12, Folate, Canine TLI (Trypsin-like immunoreactivity)
  • Reproduction hormones: Progesterone
  • Cardiac markers: Troponin-I

Cytology

Cytology services are available to VMTH clinicians and veterinarians worldwide, both for research and clinical testing. Experienced American College of Veterinary Pathologist board-certified clinical pathologists perform routine morphologic assessment of all tissue and fluid samples. Areas of expertise include: infectious disease, regenerative medicine, transfusion medicine, hemic neoplasia, cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities, and erythrocyte abnormalities. Adjunctive testing is available, including but not limited to: immunocytochemistry and special stains, molecular clonality, and PCR for infectious agents from associated UCD School of Veterinary Medicine reference & research laboratories. Along with the vast expertise of our pathology group, multidisciplinary specialty consultations with board-certified UC Davis veterinarians are available, as required.

Hematology

Hematology is the “study of blood,” including the formation of blood elements, also known as hematopoiesis, blood borne diseases, and pathology of blood cells.  Our hematology laboratory offers a wide arrange of tests in this discipline and the staff also works closely with the Transfusion Medicine and Regenerative Medicine Lab.

Complete blood and cell counts are performed on a Siemens ADVIA® 120 Hematology System since July 2002. The ADVIA 120 System offers user- friendly and veterinary-based sample handling and software, as well as gold standard flow cytometry testing.  We provide reference intervals for many veterinary species generated from the referral sample base of the VMTH. Quality assurance and quality controls are run.

Immunology / Virology

The Immunology/Virology laboratory provides diagnostic support for veterinarians in the US, as well as in Canada and overseas. Our laboratory performs a variety of tests that evaluate patients with infectious diseases including, but not limited to, Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis, Koi Herpesvirus antibody titers, Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis test, Canine parvovirus, and Canine distemper antibody titers. We also offer testing to quantitate immunoglobulins and anti-nuclear antibody testing. We work in conjunction with researchers in order to continuously improve, and offer a high quality service, and expertise to our clients.

Microbiology

The Microbiology Laboratory isolates and identifies bacterial and fungal pathogens from all animal species serving the VMTH, veterinarians outside the VMTH, and researchers investigating animal infectious diseases. Services include aerobic and anaerobic bacterial and fungal isolation and identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, antigen and serologic testing for microbial pathogens, and consultation on microbial testing results. The knowledgeable veterinary laboratory staff have experience in a variety of techniques and interpretation of testing results. Our laboratory uses both conventional morphological and biochemical testing and state-of-the-art microbial identification techniques to rapidly serve our animal patients. We feature a mass spectrometry-based matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight (MALDI TOF) identification system that is capable of identifying isolated bacteria or yeast within minutes. This technology is revolutionizing bacteriology, speeding the accurate identification of pathogens to assist the clinician in appropriate patient treatment while decreasing generation of hazardous waste.
