Case 10

Two-dimensional Echocardiograms

2d.jpg (20080 bytes)

This is a right parasternal long-axis view primarily of the left atrium (LA) and left ventricle (LV). The left ventricle appears to be more spherical than normal. The left atrium is enlarged. The pulmonary vein (PV) that can be seen entering the left atrium is markedly enlarged. This frame is taken during late diastole (the timing cursor is just before the P wave on the ECG) so the mitral valve is partially open. The leaflets do not appear to be thickened.

This is a close-up view of the mitral valve in systole (the cursor is between the QRS complex and the end of the T wave on the ECG). The leaflets again do not appear to be thickened but there does appear to be a chordal structure flipping back into the left atrium (arrow). LA; left atrium. LV; left ventricle.
