Surgical closure of the PDA may be preferred if an experienced veterinary cardiovascular surgeon is available. Surgical closure is required in very small dogs (less than 1.3 kg in our hospital) and in dogs with a very large opening in the pulmonary artery end of the PDA (more than 5 mm, as a general rule).
